school holiday accommodation

Hi,

my family and I are planing a trip back to Phuket in the June 09 school holidays (Victoria). We are planing to stay for 3 weeks and would realy like some advise on a good family friendly and moderately priced (around $80AUD per night) accommodation in the Patong, Karon or Kata areas. We were in Patong and Kata with our kids (13 %26amp; 9 yrs)in August this year. The kids enjoyed the holiday but were frustrated that there were not really any other kids at the resorts that we stayed in, needless to say that the kids are pushing for a resort with plenty of othere kids hook up with.

Thanks All

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve

The Holiday Inn is fantastic for kids. We stayed there in June 08, out of school holidays, and there were still heaps of kids so I imagine in school holidays it would be packed. We booked through a travel agent and got a stay 16 night but pay for only 10 nights deal, but this didn%26#39;t include breakfast. My kids especially loved the pool games that were held every day which were organised by the HI staff....they had heaps of fun.

We%26#39;ve also stayed at Patong Merlin 3 times and each time the place has had lots of families with kids of all ages. We also booked this through the travel agent and got a pay 7 stay 14 deal.

Don%26#39;t know exactly what we paid per night for any of our trips because we booked accomm and flights package.

I can%26#39;t give you specifics but a lot (maybe even most) hotels offer free nights in the low season.

On a side note, I had a laugh when I saw your login name. If you feel like a laugh (or maybe not) then search for an old post titled ';Resorts with a killer pool';.....very funny, although you may be put off pools with a swim up bar after reading it LOL.

Cheers

ohhh Jen....Now sorry Steve, had to check out Jen%26#39;s view on killer pool....

Jen just found the post you referred to and had the best 10 minute read lol.

Steve, Did you go past the holiday inn? From what I have read for a family trip the kids will love it and there is quite a bit of write up on the family fun rooms.

Thanks guys for all your replies,

firstly, thanks Jen, my love for the swim up bars has just dropped a couple of rungs, not a bad read and quiet a good laugh.

My wife and I stayed in the Busakorn Wing at the Holiday Inn 2 years ago and loved it. We would love to go back, we just need to try and make our budget stretch. Also I have heard that Patong Merlin is meant to be a good family style resort, any comments on it?

Cheers

Hi Steve, glad you enjoyed the read but I am sorry to be the one to ruin your love of swim up bars (hee hee).

Our last stay at Patong Merlin was in Oct 06. I think it%26#39;s a great hotel and value for money IMO. It has 3 lovely swimming pools surrounded by beautiful lush gardens and their buffet breaky is excellent.

There are family rooms, (we stayed in #1000) or I think they may call them ';suites'; which have one big room with 2 single beds, TV, fridge, kettle, tea/coffee, sitting area with a lounge and then there%26#39;s the separate bedroom with king size bed, another TV and the bathroom. There%26#39;s also the option of 2 interconnecting rooms which I think is better because you have 2 bathrooms which comes in handy. The only negative I found was the beds were way too hard for my liking but I%26#39;ve heard alot of beds in Thailand are like this, although the Holiday Inn%26#39;s beds, superior room, main wing were fantastic...not too hard, not too soft.

I have heard that the Patong Merlin%26#39;s kids club isn%26#39;t really a kids%26#39; club but more just a room with toys and a staff member manning it....no activies or program as such. Don%26#39;t know for sure if this is still the case. My kids didn%26#39;t want to use it anyway because all they wanted to do was swim in the pools. Like I said before, there%26#39;s always been lots of kids at Patong Merlin at the times we%26#39;ve stayed.

If you can stretch the budget, I think your kids would love Holiday Inn. Take a look at the link below for info on what they offer for kids.

Also, another bonus at HI is kids eat free when dining with parents in the Seabreeze restaurant (I think they have to order off the kids%26#39; menu). I didn%26#39;t find the prices to be expensive, not by our standards anyway and the quality was very good. We still ate out but it was great when we did use the offer.

Anway, have fun planning and good luck with your decision. If you do choose the Patong Merlin, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll enjoy it.

Cheers
