Calling from Thailand to Canada

Hey everyone,

So what do you think would be best option for phoning home to Canada? Cell phone vs prepaid phone cards. I have quite a few questions about both :)

I will be bringing my cell phone with me for emergencys but it sounds like it will be worth while to pick up a SIM card when I%26#39;m there if it%26#39;s cheap enough.. I am on Rogers so I can get on the GSM Network, but I bet my phone is locked.. I used my phone down in Costa Rica and Mexico with no problems before.. I have a world-roaming Quad-Band phone so it should be all good to go.

Would you suggest using your cell phone with a Thai SIM card? How much is it a minute using their network with a Thai Sim Card? Where can I get my phone unlocked so I can change SIM cards? If I get a Thai SIM card, this will make it so I don%26#39;t pay roaming charges right??

OR

If you use a pre-paid long distance card, can you pick one up here to use there? Like if I go down to Superstore and get a long distance card. Or do you need a specific card? Is it more of a hassle to try and search for a public phone (to get away from roaming charges on your cell if you choose not to use it)? Do you ever have troubles being able to use them?

Also, I am never sure how this works 100%.. If someone calls me from Canada to where ever I am in Thailand, will they get charged extra? I always get confused with that with who will get charged what for long distance.. (I use a my 5 plan and I have unlimited talk and text to the people on my list Canada Wide but I don%26#39;t think that will apply to me then?)

I know there is an option of VOIP but I won%26#39;t be around the computer a lot plus I would like some privacy than sitting in a noisy internet cafe.. Also want to make sure the connection is good as well..

Any information you could give would be great, thanks!

Another question: I found DeeDial, which seems to be a good deal.. Has anyone used it before? Does it provide decent service?

- If I used this service from my cell phone, will I get charged roaming fees if I use my normal SIM card? Or will I still need a Thai SIM card? (This is for me calling from Thailand to Canada).

Just seeing what my options are :) Thanks!!

Yes,I use the long distance international card..%26#39;Dee%26#39;.It will cost you 300 bauht(which isn%26#39;t a lot)and works out very cheap to use(3 bauht a min).If your phone is locked ,as many are from North America,I suggest that you buy a phone at MBK building in Bangkok. They have second hand models, but I purchased a new one(basic)for 30 dollars, which did the job.The line was crystal clear to u.k,hongkong and oz.Don%26#39;t know about people calling you from overseas,as phone companies have completely different rates which are always a trap. This is definitely a better option than public phones in Thailand...believe me!Also, they do unlock sim cards at MBK as well and put thai sim cards in(not sure price?)

Thanks for your reply! My biggest concern with ';Dee'; is:

- Will I get charged roaming charges on my cell phone if I don%26#39;t have a Thai SIN Card? (That I dial directly, or is it waived if I do that ';call back'; feature?) I don%26#39;t want to pay Dee%26#39;s rates and pay my Roger%26#39;s roaming rates!

- If someone from Canada calls me, will they get charged? Will I get charged Dee%26#39;s rates or the rates per my cell phone carrier? Since I am assuming I am keeping my original cell phone number with Dee that if I receive a call I would get charged but not sure what.. (Which could be really expensive and have potential roaming fees).

Another quick question about getting a local SIN Card:

Say if someone calls me from Canada to my Thai number, they will have to pay long distance right?

Is there any option that someone from Canada won%26#39;t get charged extra for calling me when I%26#39;m in Thailand without roaming fees involved? But still allow me to have affordable rates?

Sorry I am a bit confused by all this right now! :P

Hi, I brought my Rogers/Fido phone here and it works. But make sure you tell them to turn on international roaming. Its gonna cost you $$$ though.

Once you arrive go to MBK or any cel kiosk and ask them to unlock your phone and get a local sim card.

That way you only get charged for dailing long distance once, from BKK to CAn instead of the whole int roaming thing.

BTW turn on your phone when the plane lands, you get a really cool msg from Rogers that welcomes you to Thailand.

Personally I%26#39;d buy a phone over here..30 bucks isn%26#39;t gona break the bank if you are worried about your existing phone surely?
