I will be in bangkok in early nov 2008 and would love to get replicas of (old)dresses and tops i have that have been much loved and worn - staying 3 nights in central bangkok - any suggestions of good tailors

Try the Grand Fashion tailors next to the Siam City hotel. They are on Si Ayutthaya Road, nearest BTS Skytrain station is Phaya Thai (take the Skytrain exit nearest to the Florida hotel - it is about 5 minute walk from the station and use the nearby pedestrian bridge on Si Ayutthaya Road to cross that road if you don%26#39;t want to dice with death).

They do a good job copying anything and have seamstresses who specialise in ladies%26#39; clothes. I have never had a problem there and neither has my husband with his shirts, trousers and suits. Mind you, they did seem to be quite more expensive than on previous trips when I was there this summer but the quality of work is fine. Negotiate!

I would recommend you not to try Grand at Siam city i have had some bad experience there.

Grand is a guide type of shops so if you go to like this kind of shop the taxi gets 30 to 40 percent comission on your deal.

It is owned my the notrious james fashion .

The price is comparatively much higher than the other shops.

I was duped when i first visited thailand and was there.

I bought a couple of ';wool snd cashmere'; suits from Grand next to Siamcity. When I got them back to New York, my garment industry friends determined that the materials were (obviously, to them) very cheap polyester.

I went back the next year and raised a LOUD complaint inside the store. They told me the really didn%26#39;t know what the materials were, that they only know what their suppliers told them. Since the shop is full of only cloth, that excuse suggested that they are either 1. hopelessly stupid and don%26#39;t know what their own store sells, or 2. brazen liars. I go with number 2. They offered to make me another suit of any material I chose. I tried my best to pick something nice, and ended up with a another polyester suit!

My wife also made few dresses with them and she was happy.

Caveat emptor. I now use Excelsior Tailors Next to Patpong, who serves the Thai upper class. Immaculate tailoring, and I know what the material really is and they know there job.

You are going to hate me, but I had a bad experience with Excelsior with womens clothes. You may be better if you actually have the clothing to take for them to copy as I took a picture of a dress and it was not at all like the picture in the end. Three days may rush them a bit as well. I was not happy with the suits made their, however my fiancee was happy with the mens suits he purchased. Unfortunately everything that I purchased there has had to be altered. I think its a bit hit and miss, coz obviously others on this forum have been very impressed with the same tailor i found so disapointing.
