Experience of Thai culture: backpacking versus resorts

Hi everyone,

I%26#39;m doing a university assignment on the different experiences you get of the culture and local people when you backpack through Thailand, as opposed to staying in resorts. My approach is that you get a better experience of the culture and people when you backpack.

I%26#39;m posting on here so that hopefully some of you will be able to comment on my claims, maybe even have some examples for me

Thank you for any help,

Ashleigh.

';Backpacking'; doesn%26#39;t give a visitor any special insight to Thai culture or way of thinking - Khao Sarn Road is a good example of the exact opposite, as a backpacker tourist trap, Another is the full moon parties, where is the cultural experience in that? It comes down to meeting, understanding and mixing with people, not whether you backpack or stay in a resort. Some %26#39;resort%26#39; tourist take the time ands trouble to meet local people, while many backpackers just want to spend time with other backpackers. You can%26#39;t make a definition along those lines.

Depends where you go as well. Try heading to Buriram, and through Isaan. Then you will see Thailand. Krungthep is not Thailand, and Phuket and other resort areas certainly aren%26#39;t.
