malaria or dunge fever?

hi everyone first i have to say that i have been to phuket before 3 year%26#39;s and nothing happened.

now i%26#39;m going again for 10 days early august and i have read some warnings about malaria and fever do i have to take an precocious?

they made me scared and i usually don%26#39;t so easy.

malaria or dunge fever?

Hello Marythess.

The best protection is to avoid mosquito bites. Cover up and use a good repellent. Even so the chances of getting malaria and dengue fever when you are only here for a short time are not high. But it has happened.

Don%26#39;t be scared, your probably more likely to get knocked down by a motorbike.

Bye,

Mark.

malaria or dunge fever?

I haven%26#39;t heard any cases of malaria showing up lately around PHuket. (i have never in my 6 years here heard of one in Phuket)

There has been a few cases of Dengue Fever lately.

I had it, i personally know 3 others that have had it. (one is just now getting over it)

I don%26#39;t know that you can take an precocious. (i don%26#39;t even know what it means) Dengue supposedly comes from a daytime mosquito bite of a fairly huge mosquito with yellow and black body.

That being said, I also know a few hundred people who have not gotten Dengue. I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s something i would change my plans over but perhaps cover up and keep your screen doors and windows closed.

hi just read your reports we%26#39;re going in 6 days for the first time staying in the holiday inn do they have mozzi nets?

Shouldn%26#39;t be many mosquitoes around the beach area where I plan on spending much of my time , right ?

As a top resort I am sure that Holiday Inn would have protection against mosquitos. Someone else can answer that better than me. I expect they would have screeen doors.

Not many mosquitos around the beach, but carry repellent just in case.

Bye,

Mark.

You would advise wearing jeans or similar at night ?

Malaria, not a problem in the tourist areas (according to my doctor). dengue fever is a problem, but there is no inoculation currently available (Thai medical authorities are trialling one at the moment). You supposedly should wear long sleeves and pants (ha ! as if) and wear mosquito repellent with DEET in it. If you wear DEET, you have to, HAVE TO, wash it off daily as it%26#39;s a little toxic, especially on little kids. As mentioned, it%26#39;s the daytime skeeter that gives you it, and symptoms don%26#39;t appear for 5-6 days, so you%26#39;ll get some good holiday time in ! Not usually fatal, but has happened, but very unlikely unless your health is compromised already. Personally, I%26#39;m going to wear shorts and tee%26#39;s, and put on my DEET if I see people getting bitten. Yes, that%26#39;s right, after the horse has bolted.

Almost seven years LIVING here - never had dengue - don%26#39;t know anyone who has had it.

Doesn%26#39;t mean you shouldn%26#39;t be careful, but I wouldn%26#39;t be unduly alarmed. You are probably more likely to get hurt in a car accident.

Just put it in perspective. The ONLY way to be truly safe is to NEVER GO OUTSIDE ever again.

Think carefully Ted.

You don%26#39;t know my wife.

Wildo are you sure about the jab for dunge fever?

last time i spoke to doc about getting the kids jabs before our visit he recommended we all get the dunge fever jab.

Marythess, If you are worried ask your doc and if available get the jabs etc.

we always get our kids the jabs (couldnt forgive myself if the kids got anything horrible)

especially if you plan on going into the more remote areas.

oh just one other thing, I have heard that people tend to get burn even with sunscreen when taking the malairia tabs. Not sure if this is true though.
