Thai Vehicle License Plates

Hi there all! I have a query. Does anyone know where I can make a Authentic Thai Vehicle license plate in bangkok. I will be staying in the petchburi/ pratunam area. Anyone can advise? i gng in oct. thanks!

Thai Vehicle License Plates

The official ones are made by the Government road tax office.

However as well as the %26#39;official%26#39; ones you%26#39;ll see one or two more fancy styles about.

The same as in your own country, go to a car spares shop and they will probably be able to make you some.

Some of the nicer ones have a fancy %26#39;Grand Palace style%26#39; background that could be quite attractive.

Thai Vehicle License Plates

Its illegal to make or copy vehicle license plates - to reduce crime. They are only issued by the Land Transport Department. Some small shops sometimes have old plates decorating the wall, you could make offer.

Each province isues it own plates, and those with nice pictures on were special numbers bought in auction.

Illegal - I don%26#39;t think that translates to Thai??....

You can certainly buy plates here.

The standard Government ones are obvious by their simplicity. But there are plenty of cars with %26#39;made to order%26#39; plates on them.

Just something I learnt and wanted to share..red plates are mainly fakes! Yes, FAKE license plates given out by the car producers. MOST, but not all.

I thought red plates were temporary plates on a new vehicle issued until the official ones come through. That%26#39;s what our car hire company told us anyway.

thanks AndyBKK! Will be dropping by some car shops i last remembered near the MBK area enroute to my hotel during my last stay in July!

The main faked plates are some of the red ones. Red plates generally are real, issued as temporary plates for new vehicles until the Land Transport Department issues the white plates. Despite what Andy says, there are very few false white plates around (in Bangkok anyway), and its easy to check a plate by looking for the government seal.

Andy says: ';Some of the nicer ones have a fancy %26#39;Grand Palace style%26#39; background that could be quite attractive.';

These are the plates auctioned by the Land Transport Department each year. As in the west, they fetch high prices, but are not fakes.

The red ones are a standard plate handed out by individual car sales agents. Each agent has a handful of plates with the same number, representing their location.

They are replaced by the normal one a month later once the car has been registered.

Fake or not they%26#39;re just a general plate with no specific identity

Red plates are a status symbol here saying %26#39;look I%26#39;ve got a new car!%26#39;

I%26#39;m sure this guy might have a plate or two stashed somewhere:
