Has DEET really killed people?

Im going on holiday within the next few weeks and was wondering what I could use for protection against mosquitoes. Im concerned about the possibilities of malaria and other diseases. I%26#39;ve heard some horrible things about Deet being just as deadly as the mosquitoes. Are there any equally effective alternatives?

Crikey! Unless you are going jungle trekking in the North, any old mossie spray will do. DEET does%26#39;nt kill, it protects though I have never drunk a pint of it. You are overreacting to..........well, i do not know what it is that you have read or heard. malaria is practically unheard of in Thailand these dasy though dengue fever has made an unwelcome comeback. There is no real protection against that though unless you want to wander around continually smelling of chemicals. A high deet factor mozzie spray is a ll you need here (on the skin that is).

Deet has been known to have fatal effects - but so has crossing the road! If you Google ';Deet'; you will find more information which should put your mind at rest. General advice seems to be to use products with 30% maximum strength. However, there are just as effective products withoout it which we have found effectiv for us, such as Autan or Jungle Formula. I have to say I%26#39;m sat here in Crete typing this and I%26#39;ve been bit more times in less than a week than on all our visits to various parts of Thailand!

However, as ';Gas'; says it depends what parts of Thailand you are visiting. Your GP/Practice Nurse should give you the latest advice about vaccinations and protection to suit your own personal crcumstances.

I don%26#39;t blame you for avoiding DEET I used it a few years ago when treking in India and it melted my glasses frame so its not hard to guess what it does to your skin. I personally use a natural product called incognito which has been brilliant for me in a variety of countries. There website is http://www.incognitome.co.uk good luck.
