i know i need to get insurance if i hire a car

but do i need an international license

Without the licence your insurance (should you need to claim on it), will be null and void.

Go to your local RACQ, RACV etc and pick one up for about $25 (take a passport photo and your Aussie licence with you, validity is 12 months).
